The Vehicles

When it comes to overlanding, having a comfortable, aesthetic, and functional space in our vehicle is a game-changer. It's where we rest, recharge, and refuel for the next leg of our journey.

One of the biggest challenges we face when creating an overland space is figuring out how to maximize storage while still having enough room to move around comfortably. We need to fit all our gear, food, and supplies, while also having enough room to stretch out and relax. And let's not forget about comfort - after a long day of driving, we want to be able to unwind and get a good night's sleep. Functionality is also crucial - we need to be able to cook, store our belongings, and have access to amenities like electricity and water. But it's not just about functionality; aesthetics play a huge role too. We want our overland room to feel like home, with a style and design that reflect our personality. And then there's the technical aspect - we need to ensure that our DIY project is safe, durable, and can withstand the rigors of the road. It's a delicate balance, but when done right, the results are truly incredible.

One of the most significant upgrades we've made to our Defender is the interior.

So, what makes a dream overland room, exactly? For us, it's all about finding that perfect balance between comfort and function. We need a space with enough room to move around and relax. We need storage solutions that are clever and efficient, and gear that's both practical and enjoyable to use. And above all, we need a space that reflects our unique personality and style.

Dark Zebra Land Rover

Meet Dark Zebra, our 2008 Land Rover Defender 110 TD4 SVX, the very first family vehicle for our overlanding adventures. Our journey began with a sports car and a sleeping tent, followed by a 6x6 Truck Duro, but during the pandemic in 2019, we realized it was too large for global exploration, leading us to the Land Rover Defender TD4 110.

The name "Dark" reflects the Defender's striking dark hue, while "Zebra" encapsulates its aluminum accents and lively personality—adaptable, sociable, and resilient, much like the animal itself. This remarkable vehicle allows us to venture off the beaten path, navigating areas where ordinary cars wouldn't dare, resilient and adapting effortlessly to changing situations while the community of fellow travelers waves to us, engages in conversations about our journey, and offers assistance whenever needed.

After every adventure, our affection for this rugged British beast only grows, whether it’s roaring like a zebra, turning into a sauna, or transforming into an icebox. These unforgettable experiences continuously fuel our passion for exploring the world.

Dirty Panda Land Rover.png

Dirty Panda is our 2008 Land Rover Defender TD4 2.4L, which we added to our overlanding family two years after acquiring Dark Zebra. We applied all the lessons learned from our experiences with Dark Zebra to give Dirty Panda a unique touch, truly reflecting our overlanding adventures. However, after three years of using Dirty Panda, we've gathered valuable insights to enhance Dark Zebra, such as installing an Alucab shower cube with a water regulator, replacing our foldable shower tent, and using a pop roof Ikarus instead of the Darche Panorama 180 we had with Dark Zebra, to name a few.

The name "Dirty Panda" is a playful nod to its appearance. As a rugged, white overlanding vehicle often splattered with mud and dust from our adventures, the name fits, even though we take pride in keeping it polished in the garage.
